Reflection is an essential component in learning. Educators have understood for centuries that learners benefit from taking time to think, fit new concepts with ones stored in memory, consider their progress, and link ideas together in new ways. Reflection is what allows us to become wiser over time and allows for innovation, breakthroughs, and inventions. We typically reflect in thought during most of our waking hours, and some believe during sleep as well. The end result of reflection for learners is increased understanding, higher-level mental processing, and, for some, staggering brilliance and wondrous creativity.
